Academic Counselling

Teachers provide ongoing support to students in terms of their learning and academic progress. However, for students who are either struggling, or are motivated to learn at a faster rate, there is a need for additional academic counselling.

If students are falling behind either academically or in their attendance, then they meet with one of our academic managers. The academic manager seeks to understand the situation of the student, and see if there are issues that can be solved relatively easily. For example, a student may be struggling to pass the grammar section of the formative tests. The academic manager setting additional grammar focused homework on top of the standard class homework may be able to help the student catch up. The result is an organised study plan and ongoing additional academic support for the at risk student.

Life is not always easy, and emotional and physical issues can be the cause of attendance issues. If there are issues that lie outside the control of the school, such as major family issues, insomnia or difficult living situations, then the academic manager will help connect the student with student services. Sometimes it is an issue of motivation and goal setting and discussion of the importance of attendance and academic progress can help rectify the situation. Regular meetings with both academic management and our student services team continue to help the student improve their attendance.
