Manu’s Journey from Colombia to Adelaide: Studying English and Growing as a Chef

Manu, 30, from Colombia: My Student Success Story in Adelaide

My Original Inspiration to Study English
Honestly, my motivation to study English didn’t come from high school. Our mandatory classes were frustrating and rigid, and I often wondered, “Why do I need to learn another language if we don’t use it here?” I was young and naive and didn’t realize all the possibilities that learning English could bring.

When I came to Australia, it felt like starting from zero. To be honest, it was my mother who encouraged me to challenge myself and come here. I didn’t initially think about traveling or studying English, but she believed in me and gave me the push to try something new.

I’m a chef in Colombia, and when I compare the economic conditions of my profession back home with those here, the rates are much better in Australia. Working in an international environment is exciting. I use English all the time with local and international chefs and staff. Observing how others work differently has helped me grow professionally and linguistically. English has become a tool that allows me to understand others and express myself, and I love being empowered in my workplace.

My Experience When I First Arrived
When I first arrived in Brisbane, I couldn’t communicate at all. The first school I attended was not helpful; it was known more as a place to get a visa than to learn English. The classes were unstructured, with only photocopies and minimal guidance. I quickly realized I needed a proper school to actually learn English.

Classes at Native English College
At Native English College, the approach is different. Classes feel natural and free-flowing. While we do cover grammar, test-taking strategies, and the core textbook, the focus is on how English is actually used daily. Teachers emphasize speaking and writing correctly in practical situations, not just learning for the sake of a class. It feels structured yet realistic, and it has been incredibly effective for me.

What I Like About Adelaide
I really enjoy the people and the green spaces in Adelaide. There are many areas to catch up with friends, and the city is quiet and relaxing. Compared to Brisbane, I feel much more at ease here and able to be myself.

Using English in Daily Life
English is essential in my work as a chef. I use it constantly with local and international colleagues. Working in this environment has helped me improve my English rapidly and professionally. English allows me to understand others and express my ideas clearly, making me feel more confident and empowered in my workplace.

Achievements and Positive Experiences
Learning IELTS was challenging. My first attempts at PTE didn’t go well, and I felt stuck for weeks. However, the intensive support from the teachers at Native English College helped me improve. I needed a 6 for each band and 6.5 overall. With practice and feedback, I became confident and well-prepared.

Even though writing remained my lowest score, I managed to achieve my goal by compensating with other areas. The preparation at the college made taking the actual IELTS test smoother and less stressful.

Goals for the Future
In the future, I plan to take the IELTS again to achieve a higher score. My long-term goal is to become a cookery instructor in Australia. For now, I want to continue working as a pastry chef and in my management role.

Studying English has been intense and sometimes stressful, but it’s incredibly rewarding. I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in this program, improve my skills, and pursue something valuable for my career.
