Chen, 38, from China – Student Success Story at Native English College Adelaide
Why I Love Studying English
I have always had a passion for English, but for many years, work and family life in Beijing kept me too busy to practice. Now, studying English as a mature student, I find it deeply rewarding. It’s not just about learning words; it’s about understanding a new culture and being able to share my own stories with the world. My goal is to achieve a level of fluency that allows me to live and perhaps work part-time in Australia long-term.
What Inspired Me to Study English
My inspiration came from a desire for a lifestyle change. After working in a high-pressure sales position for over a decade, I wanted to experience the world. I also wanted to set an example for my young nephew, showing him that you are never too old to learn something new. I chose to study English in Australia because it’s a clean and safe place. I am from Beijing which is actually a bit too busy, so I wanted a place which is more relaxed.
Moving to Adelaide for a New Start
I moved to Adelaide six months ago. Compared to the crowded and polluted days I sometimes experienced in big cities, Adelaide feels like a garden. I chose this city because it is known for being safe and family-friendly. It is the perfect environment for someone who wants to balance serious study with a relaxed pace of life. Some days, I actually just stay at home, cook dinner, watch a movie or read a novel. I can’t imagine having that kind of spare time back home.
What I Love About Adelaide as an International Student
Adelaide is a hidden gem for international students. I love the Adelaide Central Market—it’s full of fresh produce and reminds me of the vibrant markets back home, but with a unique Aussie twist. The city is surrounded by beautiful parks, and I enjoy hiking in the Adelaide Hills on weekends. There is no discrimination here; people respect you regardless of where you come from or how old you are.
How I Use English Every Day in Adelaide
Every morning, I practice my English when I order my “Long Black” at the local coffee shop near the college. I’ve become friends with the barista, and we often talk about footy (Australian rules football) or the weather. I also joined a local community hiking group. Using English in these real-life situations is much more effective than just sitting with a textbook.
My Experience Studying at Native English College
Selecting Native English College was the best decision for my ELICOS program. The atmosphere is very professional yet warm. I was worried about being an older student, but the staff and other students made me feel very welcome. The intensive English courses are well-structured, focusing on speaking, listening, and practical writing.
The Highlight of My Australian Study Experience
The highlight has been the “English Only” policy at the college. It really pushes me to think in English. I’ve made great friends from Colombia and Thailand. Even though our backgrounds are different, we communicate in English and learn about each other’s cultures. My teachers, especially Claire, are excellent at explaining complex grammar in a way that is easy to remember and apply.
My Goals for the Future
I plan to complete my IELTS Advanced English level at NEC and then look into further vocational training here in South Australia. I want to fully integrate into the Australian community and perhaps even volunteer for local environmental projects. My journey here has just started, and I am excited about every new word I learn.
