Lin, 25, from China – Student Success Story at Native English College Adelaide
Self-Introduction
Hi, my name is Lin. I’m from Shanghai, one of the fastest-paced cities in China. I have been living and studying in Adelaide for about eight months now. Moving from a “mega-city” with 24 million people to the peaceful streets of Adelaide was a massive change, but it’s exactly what I needed to focus on my personal growth.
Why I Wanted to Study English
In China, I graduated with a degree in International Business. I realized very quickly that while I could read and write English well, I couldn’t actually speak it fluently in a professional meeting. I wanted to study English because I dream of working for a global firm. I knew that to be competitive, I needed to move beyond “textbook English” and gain the confidence to communicate with people from any country.
The Most Difficult Parts of Learning English
For many Chinese students like me, the hardest part is overcoming “Silent English.” In my country, we focus a lot on grammar and exams, so my biggest challenge was the fear of making mistakes while speaking. Understanding different accents and using Australian slang in natural conversation was also very difficult at first. Sometimes my brain still wants to translate everything from Mandarin to English, which makes me speak too slowly.
What I Love About Studying at Native English College
Native English College (NEC) is more than just a school; it’s a gateway to Australian life. What I love most is the diversity. In Shanghai, I was always surrounded by Chinese speakers, but here I have classmates from Brazil, Europe, and Japan. NEC organises fantastic Friday activities and pub nights. These social events forced me to step out of my comfort zone and use English to make real friends, which has been the best medicine for my homesickness.
My Teachers and Classes at NEC
The teachers at this English language school in Adelaide are incredibly energetic. Unlike the strict environment I was used to, the classes here are interactive. We do a lot of debates on current affairs and practical role-plays, like how to handle a job interview or a medical appointment. The teachers are native speakers who are very patient; they don’t just correct your grammar, they teach you how to sound more like a local.
What I Love About Adelaide
I absolutely love the “20-minute city” lifestyle. In Shanghai, I spent hours in traffic, but in Adelaide, everything is so close. I love the clean air, the blue skies, and the fact that I can go from the city center to a beautiful beach like Glenelg in no time. The people here are very “chill” and always happy to have a chat at the bus stop or in a café.
Life as an International Student in Adelaide
Choosing to study English in Adelaide has been a life-changing experience. The cost of living is more affordable than in Sydney or Melbourne, which makes it easier to enjoy life while being a student. The ELICOS courses at NEC provided me with a solid foundation, and the supportive environment helped me find my voice. I feel much more independent and mature than I did eight months ago.
Final Message to Future Students
If you are a student from China feeling nervous about your speaking skills, don’t hesitate. Native English College is the perfect place to break your silence. You will find a supportive community, professional teachers, and a new version of yourself. Adelaide is a city that welcomes you with open arms—just come and start your journey!
